Lander Rebounds Their Way Past North Georgia
GREENWOOD, SC – North Georgia put up
furious comeback in the final minutes, but Lander University held
on for an 85-79 victory over the Saints Monday evening in Horne
Arena in Peach Belt Conference action.
North Georgia falls to to 10-8 on the year and 4-8 in the
conference, while Lander improved to 9-9 overall and 5-7 in the
Peach Belt.
Lander used a jumper with two seconds remaining in the first half
to head into intermission with a 40-35 lead. The Bearcats led by as
many as 10 points in the opening half before North Georgia used a
7-0 run to get right back in the game.
The Bearcats came out in the second half and scored two straight
buckets to go up by nine at 44-35. North Georgia battled the entire
second half, and after finding themelves down 14 points with 2:35
remaining, went on a run that saw them knock down five
three-pointers in the final 1:47 and pull to within six points
which turned out to be the final margin of victory for Lander.
LaBrian Lyons led three North Georgia players in double figures as
he led all scorers with 25 points on 9-14 shooting. Andre Morgan
followed with 12 points, and Xavier Trice added 11.
The Lander Bearcats were paced by Houston Wright who tallied 18
points and eight rebounds, while Brenton Harris added a
double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
North Georgia lost the game on the boards all night as Lander
finished with a 52-30 advantage, including pulling down 25
offensive rebounds.
The Saints will look to get back on track on Wednesday evening as
they travel to GCSU with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
