DAHLONEGA, GA – The Saints pulled out a dramatic overtime win over rival Georgia College, 53-52, on Wednesday night in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams.
North Georgia (5-4, 1-0 PBC) bounced back after a tough overtime defeat at home last week against Limestone with an overtime victory of their own tonight, starting off the conference season on the right foot.
This was the first time North Georgia started off the conference season with a win since 2005-06 when they beat Augusta State, 82-69, the Saints first season as a member of the Peach Belt.
The offense was hard to come by for both teams as the defense was swarming all night. Both teams combined to shoot just 36 percent (44-123) from the floor and only 6 percent from the three-point line (2-35).
Neither team had a player in double figures until seven minutes remaining in the game.
Elijah Smith led the Saints with 13 points and seven rebounds. Smith had a pair of key dunks down the stretch that kept the crowd and the intensity high in a heading to overtime.
With the Saints leading by one with 12 seconds remaining in the game, Georgia College brought the ball up looking for their seventh win of the season. Scott Windom denied any hopes of that for the Bobcats, as he stripped the ball away from Bobcat guard JP Davis.
Windom finished with another double-double on the season, scoring 11 points and tallying 10 rebounds.
Freshman Travis Core scored eight points off the bench and hit a key shot to force overtime in regulation.
Georgia College (6-2, 0-1 PBC) was led by Jared Holmes who finished with a game-high 14 points. Holmes also grabbed six rebounds.
Chaun Tinney added to his league-lead in steals, finishing with four in the game.
The Saints outrebounded the Bobcats 50-33, grabbing key boards and denying Georgia College of second chance opportunities.
North Georgia plays a couple of non-conference games before returning back to Peach Belt action against Clayton State on January 3.
The Saints return to the hardwood next Monday afternoon when they travel to Belmont Abbey. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
