DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The 2012-13 basketball season is finally here and the North Georgia College & State University men's basketball team is set to open the regular season this weekend at the Mom Reeves Memorial Tournament hosted by Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.
The four-team tournament will feature two games on Friday, Nov. 9 two more on Saturday, Nov. 10.
The Saints will open the tournament with a 5 p.m. game against Salem International University on Friday before Newberry takes on Warren Wilson College at 7 p.m.
The two losers will face off in the Consolation Game on Saturday, Nov. 10 at noon while the winners will play at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Championship Game.
The Saints, who went 10-18 a season ago, currently boast a roster of 18 that includes nine returning letterwinners highlighted by 2012 All-Peach Belt Conference selection Scott Windom. Last season, Windom averaged 17.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as he made 21 starts and saw action in 25 games. He shot 45.7% from the field and 43.1% from beyond the three-point arc.
Last season, Moynihan played in 26 games and was the third-leading scorer on the team with 9.1 points per contest as he shot 37.2% from the fiend and added 4.7 rebounds per game.
As a true freshman last season, Core averaged 7.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest. He was also second on the team with 2.4 assists per game.
To help with depth both under the basket and on the perimeter, North Georgia brought in five transfers, including two Division I transfers, and will also have three freshmen on the squad.
Friday's game will also be the season-opener for Salem-International and will mark the first time the two programs have ever met on the hardwood. Last season, the Fighting Tigers went 5-21 with 23 players logging minutes at some point.
12 of those players have returned to the 22-man roster this season.
Senior Raymar Porter started 21 games last season for the Fighting Tigers as he averaged 11.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He shot 38.4% shooter from the field and 34% from beyond the arc and led the team with 46 steals.
Junior Walter Brock led the team with 11.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest a season ago. He started just 10 games but saw action in 24 of the 26 games. Was a 45.6% shooter from the field. He also had 27 blocks, best on the team.
