NEWBERRY, S.C. – Four Saints scored in double digits Friday night as the North Georgia College & State University men's basketball team opened the 2012-13 campaign with a 92-80 victory over Salem-International University in the Mom Reeves Memorial Tournament hosted by Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.
Junior transfer Ishmael Hollis led all scorers with 27 points and just missed out on a double-double in his North Georgia debut as he corralled in eight rebounds. He went 10-16 from the field including knocking down three three-pointers.
Joining Hollis with double-digit point outings were JC Ward, Scott Windom and Corey Green. Ward also came close to recording his first double-double of the season as he ended the 40-minute contest with 15 points and matched Hollis' game-high eight rebounds.
Windom recorded 14 points while Green finished with 12.
North Georgia ended the contest shooting 52.5% (31-59) from the field while Salem-International shot a similar 52.6% (30-57) from the field. The Tigers ended with a better three-point effort as they went 9-19 from beyond the arc while the Saints went 9-22.
Ka'Mar LaBrew led the Tigers with 21 points while Kevin Webb chipped in 15 and Juanito Moises added 14 points.
North Georgia held just a three-point, 40-37 lead following the first half of play, but Moises tied the game up just seven seconds into the second half with a three-pointer.
The two squads went on from there to trade the lead back and forth over the next 11 minutes but after LaBrew tied the game at 66-all, Taylor Metzger gave North Georgia the lead for good with a three ball of his own with 8:49 remaining.
Over the final eight minutes, the Saints extended their lead out to as many as 13 at one point, eventually settling for the final 12-point victory.
The Saints will next play in the tournament's championship game on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m. North Georgia will play the winner of tonight's game against Newberry College and Warren Wilson University.
