Falcons Hand Saints First Conference Loss of Season, 73-54
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia (UNG) men's basketball team had a tough time Thursday night as the Saints took on last season's NCAA Division II National Tournament Runner Up, the University of Montevallo. The Saints struggled to keep up as the Falcons delt UNG its first Peach Belt Conference loss of the season in a 73-54 game inside Memorial Hall Gymnasium.
The win edges Montevallo ahead of North Georgia in the PBC West Division rankings and takes away the final team with an unbeaten record in Peach Belt action. The Saints are now 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the league while the Falcons improve to 8-4 overall including a 4-1 conference mark.
The Falcons held North Georgia to season-lows in both first half scoring and final score as the two teams entered halftime with the score 43-26 in favor of Montevallo. The loss also broke a five-game winning streak for North Georgia that dated back to Nov. 28 when the Saints easily bested Truett-McConnell College 108-81 on the road.
The Saints have been known for their three-point shooing during the early part of the season, but they struggled to make just one three-pointer and ended the game shooting 33.3% (19-57) from the field compared to the Falcons' 50% (30-60) effort.
Scott Windom led North Georgia with 13 points off the bench while freshman guard Corey Green tallied 10 points. The freshman from Detroit, Mich. Went 6-6 from the charity stripe and also had two thunderous blocks that electrified the crowd.
Montevallo's Troran Brown led all scorers with 26 points off a 10-16 effort and also finished the night with a game-high four assists while the post tandem of Marvin Fitzgerald and Drico Hightower ended the game with 21 and 11 points respectively.
The Saints will now hit the road for a pair of critical PBC West Division games that begin with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff in Morrow, Ga. against Clayton State University on Saturday, Jan. 12. North Georgia will then take on Georgia College in a rematch of last Saturday's game, this time in Milledge, Ga. on Thursday, Jan. 17.
