DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Junior Chris Tanzy came off the bench to record his first double-double Saturday afternoon and led the University of North Georgia Saints to an 82-78 victory at home over the Augusta State University Jaguars.
The Saints improved to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the Peach Belt Conference as they recorded their second win in a row while Augusta State, a perennial favorite to win the conference, fell to 8-5 with a 4-3 mark in the league.
North Georgia ended the 40-minute contest shooting 46.7% (28-60) which included a solid 54.8% (17-31) effort in the first half of play.
Tanzy came off the bench to score 19 points in 25 minutes of action off an 8-11 shooting performance. The extremely agile guard from Marietta also continued to spread the wealth as he set up 11 other scores to record his first double-double of the season.
Lamar Richardson scored a game-high six three-pointers, five in the first half, while finishing the night with 18 points and five rebounds.
Scott Windom was the final Saint to finish in double-figures as he scored 16 points off a 5-8 performance.
Augusta State, which had four players finish in double-figure scoring, finished with a 45% (27-60) team shooting percentage with Ryan Weems' game-high 27 points leading all scorers. Weems went 9-18 from the field and hit five three-pointers while Devon Wright-Nelson ended with a double-double off 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams came out shooting early as Weems and Richardson traded three-pointers in the opening minute of regulation, but it was Augusta State establishing the early lead off an 8-3 run.
But the Saints continued to press on and used a 15-2 run in the middle of the half to establish an 18-10 lead. When Windom hit a layup with 10:23 still remaining, the lead had been extended to 10, but the Jaguars continued to fight back and the two swapped the lead twice more before North Georgia finished the half with a 42-39 lead.
The second half would prove to be an exciting one, but the Saints never relinquished the lead and were able to out-score the Jaguars 40-39 in the stanza.
Augusta State did tie the game at 51-51 off a Michael Graham layup with just over 14 minutes remaining, but the Saints opened the lead back up with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes.
With 1:20 left to play, Augusta State had fought back to within one point (79-78) after Devonte Thomas converted a rare four-point play as he was fouled on a made three-pointer. But that would be as close as the Jaguars would come as Robby Goldsmith was fouled nearly four second later and drilled both of his free throws before Tanzy put the icing on the cake with a free throw of his own.
The Saints will only have a day and a half of rest before welcoming the University of South Carolina Aiken Pacers to Dahlonega on Monday, Jan. 21 for "YMCA Night." The Saints and Pacers will tip off at 7:30 p.m. and all children who wear their rec league jersey to the game will be admitted for free, but the parents will still be required to pay the normal ticket price.
