Shorter Runs Past UNG 108-98 At PBC/Gulf South Challenge
YOUNG HARRIS, Georgia – (UNGAthletics.com) – The University of North Georgia men's basketball team returned from a nearly two week break in the schedule with a 108-98 loss to Shorter University on the opening day of the Peach Belt / Gulf South Conference Challenge hosted by Young Harris. Corey Green led three Nighthawks in double figures with 26 points on 9-12 from the floor as the loss dropping North Georgia to 1-3 on the season.
With the game tied at 31 apiece with 6:15 in the first half, Shorter would end the first period on a 22-7 run to take a commanding 53-38 lead into the break.
A three-pointer from Travis Core just over five minutes into the second period would trim the Hawk lead to five (62-57) but Shorter would score the next six points to extend their lead back to double figures.
A jumper by Green with 6:18 remaining would pull North Georgia back to within four at 86-82 but another 12-4 run by SU would put the game on ice.
Ishmael Hollis would pitch in with his second consecutive double-double registering 22 points and 12 rebounds. Core would add 14 on 5-9 shooting from the floor.
Shorter (2-2) connected on a blistering 41-76 from the field for a 54% success rate and was 11-27 from behind the three-point line. Dedric Ware and Kurtis Woods each scored a team-high 23 points to lead the Hawks. Steve Johnson added a double-double of 12 points and a game-best 13 rebounds including five offensive rebounds.
The Peach Belt / Gulf South Classic concludes tomorrow (Saturday) with a North Georgia taking on Lee University at 4:30 at Young Harris.
