DAHLONEGA, GA
– The North Georgia men’s golf team recorded their
first victory in school history on Thursday evening, holding off
the University of Dayton Ohio in a head-to-head matchup as the
Saints posted a five-shot victory over the Flyers at Achasta Golf
Club.
North Georgia, who held a 10-shot lead after the opening round of
the head-to-head competition at Reynolds Plantation, returned home
to Achasta Golf Club and saw the Flyers cut the lead in half. When
the final group walked off the 18th green as the sun set in
Dahlonega, North Georgia came away with a five shot victory,
shooting a 43-over-par 619, while Dayton tallied a 48-over-par
624.
Howard Duffin was 10 shots clear of the field after the opening
round, but Duffin’s lead was trimmed to three shots as the
Wigmore, England, native came away with a three-over-par 147 to
claim North Georgia’s first-ever individual winner. Duffin
shot a three-under-par 69 in the first round, and held on with a
six-over-par 78 to close the tournament.
Dayton’s Matt Buse was the runner-up finisher, posting a low
round of 71 on Thursday to finish at six-over for the tournament.
North Georgia’s Bryson Womack came in third with a final
round 79, finishing eight shots off the lead with an 11-over-par
155.
The Flyers’ Michael Oberschmidt took fourth with a
12-over-par 156, while teammate Sean Keating was tied for sixth at
16-over-par after a final round 81.
Jake Martin had the low round of the day for North Georgia,
posting a four-over-par 76 in the final round to finish in fifth
place overall at 13-over-par, while Brian Mallory was tied for
sixth place with rounds of 81 and 79 respectively to finish at
16-over-par.
Ben Jarrard and Stanley Roberts took 11th and 12th place
respectively, both posting opening rounds of 86, while finals
rounds of 81 and 82 put the duo at 23 and 24-over-par for the
tournament.
North Georgia returns to action on March 8-9, traveling to the 4th
Annual Piedmont College Invitational at The Orchard Golf &
Country Club.
