CLEMMONS, NC – The North Georgia men's golf team
continues to make history as the squad posted a program-low 293 to
move up two spots to eighth place heading into Tuesday's final
round of the Will Wilson Southeast Regional Preview at the par 70
Tanglewood Park Golf Club Championship Course.
Newberry College is in first place as a team entering the final round, holding a four shot lead over second place Queens and a seven stroke advantage over UNC Pembroke and Belmont who sit tied for third.
After rounding out the top 10 following the opening round, the Saints surged two spots and sit alone in eighth place after a second round 293, a score that now stands as the best round in the program's two-year history.
There is currently a three-way tie for first place individually overall with Belmont Abbey's Peter Tarver Jones, UNC Pembroke's Jonathan McCurry and Carson-Newman's Liam Ashby tied for first at 142.
Howard Duffin followed his opening round 77 with the second lowest round in school history, firing an even par 70 to vault 26 places in the standings and sit in a tie for 16th place heading into Tuesday's final round.
The Wigmore, England, native was just one shot shy of the program's all-time low round, a record Duffin set last spring with a 3-under-par 69 as he cruised to the first individual title in school history.
Duffin shares 16th place with Brian Mallory who continues his consistent play with rounds of 73 and 74 to also sit at 7-over-par (147) and just five shots off the leaders.
Bryson Womack also catapulted up the leaderboard on Monday, following an opening round 77 with a second round 1-over-par 71, putting the sophomore just one shot behind his teammates in a tie for 24th place overall at 8-over-par.
Grant Rish tallied rounds of 75 and 78 to open the tournament, while Jake Martin's opening round 88 and second round 81 have the sophomore rounding out the team.
The third and final round of the Will Wilson Southeast Regional Preview is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the par 70 Tanglewood Park Golf Club Championship Course.
