Herrera Sends the Saints Home for the Playoffs

Americus, GA – North Georgia used three
second-half goals to take down Georgia Southwestern 3-0 Saturday
afternoon at Hurricane Field in Peach Belt Conference action. With
the victory, the Saints are set to host a playoff game Tuesday
afternoon at the Soccer Complex.
North Georgia (7-10-1, 2-3-1) ends the regular season in fourth
place in the Peach Belt Conference and are set to host a PBC
Tournament game Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The Saints will play
host to UNC Pembroke, a team they beat 2-1 in North Carolina
earlier this season.
The Saints and Hurricanes battled to a scoreless intermission at
Georgia Southwestern as both teams tallied three shots on goal, and
both keepers made all three stops in the first half.
The Saints finally broke through midway through the second period
as Jose Herrera scored off a rebound in the 65th minute to give
North Georgia a 1-0 advantage. Avram Allen followed just five
minutes later at the 69:36 mark, sending a shot past the Hurricane
keeper to extend the Saints’ lead to a pair at 2-0.
Freshman Terry Gibbs added an insurance goal in the closing
minutes, breaking free and sending a laser shot home from 18 yards
out in the 86th minute, securing the road victory in the regular
season finale.
Rade Tanaskovic continued his good work in goal, picking up his
fifth shutout of the year as he stopped four shots by the
Hurricanes.
North Georgia returns to action on Tuesday afternoon in the first
round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, hosting UNC Pembroke
at 3:30 p.m.
