Saints Drop Season Opener 2-1 at Mount Olive
Jose Herrera Scores Saints' Only Goal
Mount Olive, NC - North Georgia College &
State University jumped out to an early lead on a Jose Herrera
goal, but the Saints were unable to hold off the Trojans as Mount
Olive College came from behind to pick up a 2-1 victory Friday
night at Amon Field in the Sleep Inn Classic.
North Georgia (0-1-0) opened the scoring in the seventh minute
after Mount Olive was unable to clear the ball out of the back.
Stan Soulen crossed the ball from the right sideline and Jose
Herrera put the ball home from five yards out to give the Saints a
1-0 lead at 6:48.
The Trojans had several flurries in the North Georgia box midway
through the half, but Saints goalkeeper Rade Tanaskovic smothered a
loose ball in front of the goal deflected a cross to prevent a
shot.
The Trojans evened the match at the 35:47 mark when Scott Mitchell
kept the ball alive in the right corner and crossed into the box.
Matt Wallin one-touched the ball to freshman Angelo Acquah, who
scored from in front of the post for his first collegiate goal.
Mount Olive took its first lead of the match barely two minutes
into the second half after a North Georgia foul in the box.
Mitchell converted the penalty kick at the 47:04 mark.
The Trojans survived a pair of dangerous chances by North Georgia
just seconds apart midway through the second half. Trojan
goalkeeper Chris Slaughter made a save on Calvin Cook’s
header from close range in the 68th minute. Less than a minute
later, Herrera nearly scored his second goal off a cross to the far
post, but his shot went just wide to the left.
Mount Olive outshot North Georgia 11-9. Slaughter had three saves
for the Trojans, while Tanaskovic recorded four saves for the
Saints.
The Sleep Inn Classic concludes Saturday with a pair of matches at
Amon Field. St. Andrews takes on North Georgia at 5 p.m., followed
by Mount Olive against Catawba at 7:30 p.m.
