Lions Drop North Georgia 3-0 in Season Opener
SAINT LEO, FL – North Georgia College
& State University never got off the deck Saturday evening in
their season opener, allowing a first half goal before St. Leo
University added two more in the second period to take a 3-0
victory over the Saints in non-conference action.
North Georgia drops their season opener for the fourth consecutive
year, falling to 0-1-0 on the season, while St. Leo stays perfect,
improving to 2-0 on the young year, outscoring their opponents 10-0
in the process.
The Lions jumped out on top in the 28th minute, taking advantage
of a foul in the box as Bruce Cutler converted the penalty kick for
a 1-0 lead. St. Leo held a one-goal lead at the half, but wasted
little time scoring in the second period as Cutler recorded his
second penalty kick of the game, this time in the 59th minute to
give the home team a 2-0 lead.
St. Leo put one final goal on the board in the 69th minute. Bobby
Huertas notched his fourth goal of the season on a pass from
Leonardo Nogueira to give the Lions a 3-0 victory.
Sean Durkan suffered the loss for the Saints in goal, allowing all
three goals while recording seven saves. Erik Mozzo picked up the
win for the Lions, stopping seven shots to improve to 2-0 on the
season.
North Georgia returns to action on Wednesday, September 2, hosting
Erskine College for the Saints’ 2009 home opener. Kickoff is
set for 6:00 p.m. at the Soccer Complex.
