Braves and Saints Battle to Double Overtime Tie
Saints to battle Flagler in opening Round of PBC Tournament
DAHLONEGA, GA
– The North Georgia men’s soccer team staged a
second-half comeback Saturday to force a deadlock with UNC Pembroke
as the two teams battled to a double-overtime 1-1 tie in Peach Belt
Conference action.
The Saints move to 5-10-1 on the season and 1-6-1 in the Peach
Belt Conference, while UNC Pembroke moves to 8-7-2 overall and
3-4-1 in the league.
North Georgia will travel to St. Augustine for the first round of
the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the Saints will battle PBC
Regular Season Champion Flagler for the right to advance to the
"PBC Final Four" in Augusta next weekend. In a physical contest
just a week ago that featured five yellow cards and a pair of
ejections, Flagler emerged victorious, but North Georgia is looking
to deny the new league member their first PBC Tournament victory,
while the Saints will be looking to win their first round
tournament game for the third straight season.
UNC Pembroke struck first in the 35th minute as Carlos Cipriano
took a pass from Andy Pullin at the top of the box and sent a shot
past North Georgia keeper Rade Tanaskovic to give the Braves a 1-0
lead, a score that held true until intermission.
The Saints finally tied the game in the 63rd minute as Ben Tayi
struck for his first collegiate goal. The unassisted goal knotted
the score at a goal apiece.
Both teams had numerous chances to break the tie at the end of
regulation and in both overtimes, but North Georgia’s
Tanaskovic and UNC Pembroke’s Horatio Bynes made a series of
miraculous saves in goal down the stretch to preserve the 1-1 tie.
