Stegman's Golden Goal Stifles Erskine in Double OT
DUE WEST, SC – The North Georgia men's soccer team
put an end to a two-game skid on Wednesday evening, traveling to
Erskine College and scoring the game's only goal in double overtime
to soar past the Flying Fleet at Huggins Field in non-conference
action.
The Saints improve to 5-2-3 overall on the year and 1-1 in away
games, while the Flying Fleet fall to 6-4 on the year, but drop
their first home of the season in six attempts. North Georgia is
still unbeaten in five double overtime games this season, moving to
2-0-3 in those games.
North Georgia had chances all game, dominating in every offensive
category, but not breaking through until double overtime and a goal
in the 104th minute by Ben Stegman sent the
Saints to a 1-0 victory over Erskine College.
For Stegman, the freshman records his third goal of the season and
his first game-winning goal of his collegiate career as the Saints
escape with a win in the first of crucial back-to-back
non-conference games to open the final month of the regular
season.
Rade
Tanaskovic was perfect in goal, picking his fourth shutout of
the season as the junior recorded a save in the first half and two
more in the second half before the defense clamped down on the
Flying Fleet and did not allow a shot on goal in either extra
period.
North Georgia held an 18-7 advantage in shots, while taking 13
corners to just four for Erskine. A pair of yellow cards were
awarded to each team, while the Flying Fleet was whistled for 13
fouls to seven for the Saints.
The Saints return to action over the weekend, welcoming St.
Andrews to town for a Saturday afternoon battle in non-conference
action. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Soccer Complex.
