ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – The North Georgia men's soccer
team was just minutes away from forcing a deadlock with Flagler
College on Saturday evening, but a golden goal in the 97th minute
proved to be the difference as the Flagler Saints came away with a
1-0 overtime victory in Peach Belt Conference.
North Georgia's late-season struggles continue, dropping their
second straight contest and falling to 7-5-3 overall on the year
and 2-4-1 in Peach Belt Conference action.
Flagler now controls their own destiny to host a game in the first
round of the PBC Tournament, improving to 10-3-1 overall and 4-2 in
league play with their third consecutive victory.
Juan
Hurtado proved to be the biggest offensive threat for North
Georgia as the sophomore tallied three of the team's 16 shots, with
a pair of those on target, but they resulted in two of four saves
on the night for Flagler goalkeeper Matt Gilam.
Flagler was relentless all evening, recording 28 shots with seven
of those on goal, but it only took one to make the difference as
Will Frandsen fired a shot that was blocked, but the ball ended up
right back at the junior's foot and he would not miss a second
time, bouncing a two-hopper inside the left post to end the game.
The goal at the 96:40 mark proved to be the game-winner and
Frandsen's third score of the season.
Kristopher
Alonzo went the distance for North Georgia, tallying six saves,
but suffering his second consecutive loss as the Saints drop a pair
of games on their road trip to the Sunshine State.
The Saints will have three days off before returning home to
battle Brevard College on Wednesday evening in non-conference
action. The contest will serve as Senior Night as North Georgia
will honor Stan Soulen, Ben Chedgy, Ben Ellgass, and Chris Aiken
playing in their final home regular season games for the Saints.
Kickoff against the Hurricanes is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Soccer
Complex.
