Man Down Braves Force Double Overtime Deadlock

PEMBROKE, NC – The North Georgia men's soccer team continued a trend of overtime contests on Saturday afternoon, but couldn't take advantage of a UNC Pembroke red card as the two teams battled to a scoreless double overtime tie in Peach Belt Conference action.

North Georgia played in their ninth overtime game and seventh double overtime contest of the year as the Saints move to 8-5-4 overall and 2-4-2 in Peach Belt Conference action, while the Braves are now 5-8-4 on the season and 1-5-2 in league action.

The Saints and Braves played an uneventful first half, combining for just seven shots and six corners kicks, sending the game into a scoreless intermission. The turning point came 10 minutes into the second half as Alex Antonescu was awarded a red card, giving North Georgia an advantage for the rest of the game, but the Saints were unable to take advantage, firing 28 shots, but never finding the back of the net.

North Georgia kept the pressure on the UNCP defense in the extra periods, sending six shots toward goal in each overtime, but the Braves held on to force a double overtime tie.

Rade Tanaskovic was golden in goal, recording three saves for his sixth shutout of the season, while Ryan Hanson matched the North Georgia keeper step-for-step, notching eight saves for the 110 minute shutout.

The Saints return to action in the opening round of the PBC Tournament on Tuesday evening at Flagler College. Kickoff in another battle of the Saints is set for 7:00 p.m. in St. Augustine, Florida. Last weekend, Flagler used an overtime goal to edge North Georgia 1-0 at Saints Field.
