AUGUSTA, GA - After an outstanding week of soccer, Zachry Samples has been named the Peach Belt Defensive Player of the week.

The league office announced the news Tuesday afternoon, just before North Georgia was about to take down Alabama-Huntsville, 6-2.

Samples was exceptional the past week, leading the Saints to their second conference win of the season. Playing all 90 minutes of the 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten UNC Pembroke on Saturday evening, Samples was instrumental to the Saints success.

Anchoring the center back position, Samples was given the tall task of filling the shoes of standout Ben Chedgy. Chedgy was a three-time all-conference performer over the past three seasons for the Saints, and was one of the best defenders to come through North Georgia in quite some time. Samples has taken the role and filled it quite well, and he is only in his sophomore season.

Not only was Samples key to the defense last week, but he also contributed on the offensive side. Scoring on a header to give the Saints a 2-1 lead against UNCP, Samples was all over the pitch the entire evening. In his previous game against Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, Samples played 45 minutes and was not on the field when the Bears scored their game-winning goal.

Samples has started and played in all seven games this season for Pat Parris. Along with Ben Tayi and Payne Wright, the Saints defense has been bolstered by the three as of late.

Samples is the first Saints player to earn the award since Ben Chedgy did the week of September 7, 2010.

Samples will now lead the defense on the road at the University of Montevallo on Saturday. North Georgia will be trying to win its third conference game of the season and improve their record to 3-0.
