MONTEVALLO, AL – The North Georgia men's soccer team could not capitalize on a first-half red card and fell 2-1 at the hands of the University of Montevallo Saturday evening at Varsity Field in Peach Belt Conference action.
The Falcons got on the board first in the final seconds of the opening half when Patrick Dean sent a free kick to the box that was deflected by Phil Jackson and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Montevallo lead.
The goal just seconds before the half came minutes after Pedro Carneiro exited the contest with a red card to give North Georgia a huge advantage, but the Falcons scored the first goal of the game and took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The Saints finally capitalized on their man-up advantage in the 53rd minute when Manuel Hernandez took a pass from Gustavo Cunha and fired a shot past Falcon goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway to knot the score at a goal apiece.
Montevello responded just 12 minutes later at the 64:37 mark when Jackson Tolleson tallied his second goal of the year to give the Falcons a 2-1 edge.
North Georgia fought down to the wire trying to tie the game again, but the playing field was evened in the 90th minute when Zachry Samples was awarded a red card and Montevallo captured their first Peach Belt Conference victory of the season, improving to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league action.
The Saints dropped to 4-3-1 on the year and suffered their first conference blemish of the season, falling to 2-1 in PBC play. North Georgia continues to struggle against Montevallo, falling to 0-6-1 all-time against the conference rival.
The Falcons held a slight 15-13 edge in shots and had four corner kicks to just two for North Georgia.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday evening, traveling to Clayton State University for another Peach Belt Conference matchup. Kickoff against the Lakers is set for 7:30 p.m.
