DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia men's soccer team looks to win back-to-back games in conference on Saturday when they host Lander University on Senior Day.
The Saints took down Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday in the annual Cancer Awareness Day events. The game proved to be all the fans wanted to see in the double overtime thrilling victory. Max Angel buried a free kick with just over five minutes remaining in the double overtime period to send North Georgia to 3-3 in conference.
Lander Bearcats Body of Work
Current Record: 7-5-2 (4-1-1 PBC)
Goal Differential in 2011: +10
Conference Current Rank/Pre-season Prediction: 3rd/4th
Last Meeting vs. Lander: Bearcats won 1-0 last season
Senior Salute: Saturday's game against Lander will be Senior Day for the Saints soccer team. The four seniors will be honored for their dedication to athletics and academics over their past years as a student-athlete. Rade Tanaskovic, Korey Daigle, Gray Phelps and Carlos Avendano will all enjoy their last home game playing for the Saints. Following the women's game, the four student-athletes will be honored at midfield.
Coming Home: North Georgia has the opportunity to host a Peach Belt Conference Tournament game if they can win out and receive some help. The Saints are sitting at 3-3 in conference, tied for fourth in the league with Clayton State. Because the Saints lost to the Lakers earlier this season, they must finish ahead of Clayton because they do not hold the tiebreaker. Wins against Lander and Francis Marion, along with a Clayton State loss or draw, would allow North Georgia to host in the postseason tournament, an advantage they would be sure to capitalize on.
Dominating Dahlonega: The Saints have simply dominated at home this season, while leaving their particular struggles on the road. North Georgia boasts a 5-1 record at home, a place they have come accustomed to winning at. The way the schedule plays out, they have to be pleased to have Lander at home while traveling to Francis Marion. The Patriots have struggled this season, and North Georgia will have something to play for the last game of the season while Francis Marion may be packing it in. Hosting Lander on Saturday could play for a huge advantage for the Saints. The Bearcats have played just four away games and have won only one of them.
Nine & Nine: Lander is led by Brett Jankouskas and Chris Hobbs who have each scored nine goals this season. Together they have scored 18 of the teams 33 goals. They have combined for only two assists, so they look to create their own shots and make runs off the ball. If North Georgia can contain these two players, they have to like their chances against these Bearcats.
Max Moments: Midfielder Max Angel has had a knack this season for the late-game dramatics. Angel sent the Saints off with another golden goal win on Wednesday, this time Georgia Southwestern was his victim. If this game is tight down the stretch, look for Angel to have a say in who comes out of this game with the "W".
