Men’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Tie with Warriors to End Preseason
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The North Georgia College & State men's soccer team took to the pitch for the final time in preseason action Saturday night. The Saints hosted Southern Wesleyan University in a spirited match that ended in a 1-1 draw in front of a crowd of close to 600 people.
The tie gave the Saints their second positive result of the preseason to end with a 1-1-1 record heading into the regular-season opener next Friday, August 31 in the Clayton State Laker Shootout.
The Saints found the back of the net in the first half when Max Angel struck the ball into the back of the net off a penalty kick.
Both teams had several good looks at the goal, but could not capitalize until Southern Wesleyan scored late in the second half. With just three minutes remaining in the contest, Daniel Pena scored on his own penalty kick for the Warriors.
The Warriors held the advantage in shots, 17-9, but the Saints kept the ball on Southern Wesleyan's end of the pitch for a majority of the game and the Saints' keeper, Kristopher Alonzo, made nine saves.
The Saints will now turn their focus on the Clayton State Laker Shootout where they will take on Queens University out of Charlotte, N.C. on Friday, Aug. 31 and Pfeiffer University on Saturday, Sept. 1. Both contests.
North Georgia's first four games of the regular-season will be on the road. The first home contest for the Saints will be Tuesday, Sept. 11 against Lenoir-Rhyne at 6 p.m.
