Men's Soccer Battles #22 Flagler To 1-1 Peach Belt Draw
DAHLONEGA, Georgia – (UNGAthletics.com) – The UNG men's soccer team recorded its second straight Peach Belt Conference draw as the Nighthawks posted a hard-fought 1-1 tie with #22 Flagler College. The draw moves North Georgia to 3-11-2 overall and 1-4-1 in league action.
James Dobbin used a well-placed through ball from teammate Andrew Leuer to beat FC keeper Camp Bissell in the lower left corner and register the Nighthawk's score at the 26:59 mark of the first half. The goal and assist were the duo's first of the season.
Flagler's equalizer would come with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation as Zach Shanahan would put a penalty kick past UNG goalie Kristopher Alonzo following a Nighthawk foul just inside the box.
North Georgia came close to a golden goal twice in extra time as a Richard Westerfield header grazed the post in the first overtime and a shot by Zach Tibbs just missed on the high side in the second period. Alonzo secured the draw with a point-blank save on another shot attempt from Shanahan with less than two minutes to play.
The physical game featured 33 fouls and seven yellow cards.
Flagler (8-3-3, 5-2-2 PBC) entered the match ranked #22 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II national rankings.
The draw was North Georgia's second consecutive PBC tie and marked the fourth win or draw in the last five contests for the Nighthawks.
North Georgia returns to action on October 30 when the team hosts Lander University in PBC action with kick off slated to start at 7:30 PM.
