Saints Devour Wolves 9-0 in Men's Tennis Action
DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia men's tennis team made it a clean 9-0 sweep over Newberry College on Tuesday afternoon, blanking the Wolves at the Yahoola Creek Tennis Facility in non-conference action.
The Saints have now won three of their first five matches to open the season, improving to 3-2 overall on the season, while Newberry drops to 1-6 on the year.
North Georgia got off to a quick start in doubles play as Brandon Sloan and Felipe Friedrich dominated at No. 1 doubles, picking the 8-1 victory, while Adrien Saulais and Mateus Camasmie held on for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Giovani Santos and Ernesto Farinas made it a clean sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, giving the Saints a commanding lead heading to singles play.
The Saints continued to blank the Wolves in singles play, including a pair of three-set matches, as Camasmie pulled out a 7-2 tiebreaker in the second set to win 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2 singles.
Andy McMaster made his debut for the 2011 season at No. 6 singles, and after falling 4-6 in the opening set, he rallied with wins in back-to-back sets, taking down David Sons 6-1, 6-4 in the final two sets to grab the win.
Saulais also had a slow start at No. 3 three singles, dropping the opening set 2-6, but rallying late in the day and taking the second 6-4, before coming back edging Mohammed Chakir 10-7 in the 10-point tiebreaker to give the Saints a 9-0 victory.
The Saints will now enjoy their longest break of the season between matches, taking 10 days off before returning to action on March 5, in Americus, Ga., with a Peach Belt Conference battle with Georgia Southwestern. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m. against the Hurricanes.
