Men's Tennis Finishes Play at ITA Southeast Regional

SUMTER, SC - The North Georgia men's tennis team closed out their first weekend of action of the fall competing in the 2011 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships held at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

In the men's Single-B draw, Mathew Guida coasted past the competition advancing to the semifinals before withdrawing from the match. During his run, Guida had straight set victories over Lander's Renato Assad and Max Desmars before withdrawing against Jonathan Hain of Francis Marion.

After a straight set first round victory over Erskine College's Vincent Chauvette, Mario Mesquita defeated Limestone's Daniel Lopez before falling to conference foe Adam Hunt of Flagler in the round of 16.

Ernesto Farinas defeated Flagler's Nicholas Scammacca in the opening round, before falling in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to Abraham Lascari Diaz of Limestone College in the round of 32.

In doubles action, the duo of Mesquita and Guida fell to conference rivals Wictor Andersson and Leo Bernardes of Georgia College 8-4 in the round of 32 after receiving a first round bye.

After also receiving a first round bye, the tandem of Giovani Santos and Brandon Sloan lost a 9-7 thriller to Marcelo Tatai and Alex Hayes of Lees-McRae. 

Other members of the team were due to see action in the consolation brackets, but play was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The ITA Regional Championships, sponsored by the USTA, date back to 1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex Regional Championships. The ITA Regional Championships featured the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools participated in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
