ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – The North Georgia men's tennis team won their seventh straight match on Saturday afternoon, upsetting No. 11 Flagler 5-4 at the Flagler Tennis Center.
The Saints (7-1, 2-0 PBC) continue to reel off wins early in the season and are off to their best start in school history, while Flagler (4-4, 1-2 PBC) dropped their second straight conference match.
For the first time in the program's young seven-year history North Georgia is 2-0 in conference play. The last time the Saints won two conference matches in a season was in 2005 in the program's final season at the NAIA level.
Coach Kent Norsworthy's squad is much improved in 2012 and through just two matches they have matched their conference winning totals from the past six seasons.
The Saints got out of the gates quick, taking two of three doubles matches as the duo of Brandon Sloan/Giovani Santos cruised to an 8-0 victory at No. 3, while the tandem of Rodrigo Magan and Matheus Guida rallied from 5-0 deficit to win their match 9-8.
Flagler rallied in singles action and the two conference rivals battled down to the wire. During the final four matches three were in the third set and North Georgia needed to win two of them to capture the victory, and they did just that.
Sloan was the only North Georgia player to win his match with relative ease as he cruised at No. 6 singles winning in straight sets, while Santos and Mateus Camasmie each took part in three-set thrillers.
Santos held on to win his match 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, while Camasmie outlasted his opponent, scoring a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) come-from-behind victory.
The youthful Saints are on pace for their best season in school history and they look to run their winning streak to eight on Sunday, March 4, as they visit Savannah to take on national powerhouse Armstrong.
