DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia men's tennis team learned their NCAA postseason fate on Tuesday evening when the NCAA Selection Show announced the Saints as the No. 7 seed in the Southeast Region.
In a season full of firsts, North Georgia makes their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament and will take on 2nd-seeded Columbus State in the opening round on Saturday at a time to be announced in the coming days.
The Cougars will play host to the Southeast Region #2 where four Peach Belt Conference teams will battle it out over the weekend. The Regional will be played at the Blackmon Tennis Center on the Campus of Columbus State University. Match times will be announced in the coming days.
The Saints will take on the Cougars for the third time this season with the winner advancing to take on the winner of Augusta State and Lander University. North Georgia is 0-2 against Columbus State in 2012, falling 7-2 at home to the Cougars, before falling 5-1 in the opening round of the PBC Tournament.
North Georgia is 14-8 on the season and finished the conference slate at 3-6 on the year. The Saints, currently ranked No. 25, are enjoying their first-ever national ranking in school history as they now prepare for the program's first NCAA Tournament birth.
In the Southeast Region #1, top-ranked and top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic will play the winner of Wingate and Mount Olive who will go head-to-head in the play-in round, while Georgia College and Francis Marion will battle for the right to advance to the second round.
All in all, the Peach Belt Conference kept their dominance in tact in 2012, putting seven of the nine teams in the Southeast Regional, including each of the top seven seeds.
The 48-team field features 15 automatic bids and 33 at large bids with the final 16 teams advancing to the National Championships and the NCAA Spring Festival in Louisville, Kentucky next month.
