DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia men's and women's tennis teams were finally able to start their 2013 Spring schedules Wednesday afternoon after having last weekend's matches postponed due to inclement weather. The nationally 23rd-ranked men took down the Hawks of Shorter University 5-4 while the women fell 4-5 to the Hawks at the North Georgia Tennis Complex.
Both North Georgia teams were able to jump out to 2-1 leads following the doubles portion of the matches.
On the men's side, Sam Gantt and Giovani Santos took down Colt Kelley and Robert Watson 8-5 at No. 2 doubles while Mario Mesquita and Ernesto Farinas defeated Marc Guerry and Nikola Pavlovic 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
For the women, Natalia Escobar and Mathilda Baartvedt won at No. 1 doubles 8-5 over Candice Laurent and Aurelie Gaborit and Cameron Williams teamed up with Adalyn Hazelman to take down Iesha Holton and Sicquena Sinclair 8-2 at No. 2.
In singles action, both matches came down to the final two contests on the courts as the Saints found themselves up 4-3 in both the men's and women's matches.
On the men's side, Felipe Friedrich took down Romain Lefevre (6-3, 6-4) at No. 1 singles and Santos defeated Guerry (6-3, 3-6, 6-0) in three sets to set the score at 4-3 with the final two matches left to be contested. Mateus Pineda ultimately claimed the needed fifth victory for the Saints when he took down Kelley in three sets ( 6-1, 4-6, 6-4).
For the women, Escobar and Baartvedt each won their singles matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, leaving Audrey Marlette and Natasha Bertolucci as the final two Saints left on the court to decide the match. Marlette ultimately fell (6-3, 6-1) to Alicia Gallard, leaving the tie-breaker hinging on the No. 5 singles match between Bertolucci and Sinclair. Sinclair claimed the win after dropping the first set 4-6 with two-straight 6-0 in the second and third sets.
