Women's Tennis Earns 5-4 Win Over Lander, #32 Men Fall 2-7 to #7 Bearcat Men

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women's tennis team did something Friday afternoon that they have never done before: beat Lander University. The Saint women claimed a 5-4 victory over the Bearcat women at the North Georgia Tennis Complex while the 32nd-ranked men's team fell 7-2 to the No. 7 Lander men.

UNG's women (6-9, 2-7 PBC) swept the doubles action with Natalia Escobar and Mathilde Baartvedt winning 8-5. Cameron Williams and Adalyn Hazelman earned an important 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles and Audrey Marlette teamed up with Nella Handac to finish the sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

The sweep of doubles action proved to be vital for the Saints as they took only two of the singles matches. Williams (10-5) continued to dominate at No. 1 singles as she earned her eighth win in a row Friday. Baartvedt won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-2 to stretch her current streak to four.

Hazelman's match at No. 4 singles came down to the third set with both sides battling hard, but Aurelia Ruffat ultimately claimed the line 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

On the men's side, UNG (7-7, 1-7 PBC) was able to claim wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles with Felipe Friedrich defeating his fourth ranked player of the year. Friedrich, ranked 31st in the nation as a singles player, defeated No. 26 Vincent Verpeaux 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 while Matheus Guida earned a solid win over Adam Jonsson in straight sets.

The two squads have one final home match of the season together on Tuesday, Apr. 2. The Saint men and women will welcome Young Harris College to the North Georgia Tennis Complex for a 2:00 p.m. match.
