UNG Men's Tennis Breezes Past Erskine 8-1, Women Drop Hard-Fought 5-4 Decision
DAHLONEGA, Georgia – (UNGAthletics.com) – The University of North Georgia men's tennis team opened up the 2014 season by breezing to an 8-1 victory over Erskine College while the women's team dropped a hard-fought 5-4 match with the Flying Fleet at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Park.
On the men's side, the only dropped point was at #1 singles where the Nighthawk's Matheus Guida retired due to an ankle injury despite leading 6-3, 4-2.
Mateus Camasmie posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over EC's Wilson Mathewes at #2 singles while teammate Rodrigo Magan defeated Alan Pearce by an identical score at #4 singles.
Guida and Camasmie earned a 9-7 win at #1 doubles over Jason Harris/Matthewes in the afternoon's closest match.
The women's match saw the Nighthawks battle the Conference Carolinas preseason favorite down to the final match where Erskine's Mollie Polk edged freshman Alexis Lee, who was playing in her first collegiate match, in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 nail-biter at #6 singles.
Erskine earned two of the three doubles points after UNG's Audrey Marlette and Nela Handac breezed past Haley Watley and Haley Elliott at #3 doubles.
Natalia Escobar and Handac each posted singles victories at #3 and #5 singles respectively.
Cameron Williams (#18 in Southeast Region) defeated EC's Corin Hallman (#14 in Southeast Region) 6-4, 6-0 at #1 singles in a battle of regionally-ranked players.
As a team, Erskine is ranked #44 nationally in Division II and #7 in the Southeast Region in the most recent ITA rankings.
The UNG men will be in action on short rest with a road trip to Dalton State College on Sunday (Feb. 2) while the women are scheduled to return to the courts on Feb. 5 at Shorter University along with the men.
