Nationally-Ranked Francis Marion Hands UNG Tennis Teams Identical 7-2 Losses
FLORENCE, South Carolina – (UNGAthletics.com) – The University of North Georgia men's and women's tennis teams each dropped their Peach Belt Conference openers by identical 7-2 scores on Saturday afternoon to nationally-ranked Francis Marion at FMU's Kassab Courts.
In the men's match, UNG fell behind 3-0 after the doubles flight despite three well-contested matches. The Nighthawks were able to pick up a pair of straight-set singles victories at second and third singles as Rodrigo Magan downed Tim Ruepke 6-4, 6-2 and teammate Giovani Santos eased past Eimon Heywood 6-2, 6-1 at #3.
The loss ended a season-opening five match winning streak for North Georgia as the Nighthawks fall to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in PBC play. 17th-ranked Francis Marion improved to 4-1 and 1-0 in league matches. North Georgia returns to the courts on Feb. 25 when the team travels to face Dalton State in a reschedule match from earlier in the season.
The women also fell behind 3-0 after doubles to the 12th-ranked Patriots despite a tough tiebreaker loss at #2 as FMU's Samantha Kolliker and Veronika Viegas edged UNG's Natalia Escobar and Mathilde Baartvedt 9-8 (8-6).
North Georgia (4-2, 0-1) earned a pair of points at the bottom of the singles lineup with Nela Handac and Mallory Kolts each posting straight-set victories at fifth and sixth singles respectively.
The Nighthawk women return to action tomorrow (Feb. 23) with a PBC match at UNC Pembroke.
