Rifle Wraps up Final Home Match of Season
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia mixed rifle team hosted two NCAA Division I teams on Saturday, Feb. 2 to close out its home schedule. Competing against the Saints were the No. 9 University of Memphis and No. 13 North Carolina State University.
The three position smallbore (.22) event was contested in the morning with N.C. State posting a score of 2269/2400 points to sneak past Memphis' 2250 by 19 points for the event win. The Saints recorded posted a 2160 to place third.
Contributing to the team score for smallbore were freshmen Casadie Bragg (549/600) and Cadet Kyle Bailey (546), along with sophomores team captain Cadet Luke Duncan (542), and team co-captain Chris Tam (523).
In the afternoon, the teams competed in standing air rifle with Memphis taking the event win with a 2329/2400 score, just six points ahead of N.C. State (2323), while UNG claimed third with 2274 points.
Combining for the team score for the Saints were Bragg (580/600), sophomore Cadet Chris Tiller (566), freshman Sara Howell (565) and Duncan (563). Howell tied her personal best, while freshman Cadet Andrew Abernathy posted his new personal best (560). Bragg's excellent score placed her fifth in a very strong field of competitors from the Division I schools.
N.C. State was able to hold off Memphis for the upset win in the combined aggregate, 4592 to 4579. UNG finished third with 4434 points overall.
The Saints return to action this weekend with a match at Virginia Military Institute on Saturday, Feb. 9.
