Nighthawks Claim Senior Military Championship At First SEARC Event Of Season
LEXINGTON, Virginia – (UNGAthletics.com) – The University of North Georgia Mixed Rifle team got the 2013-2014 season off to a fast start as the team won the Senior Military College Championship at the first South Eastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) event held hosted by Virginia Military Institute.
The Nighthawks opened the season with a record-breaking performance as UNG broke the school record for smallbore team score with a 2,187 bettering the previous mark of 2,184 by three points.
In the composite NCAA team standings, North Georgia edged The Citadel men's team by two points, 4,453 to 4, 451. VMI's mixed team finished third with a composite score of 4,390. UNG finished second in both the air and small bore team standings as NC State claimed team air rifle honors and The Citadel men's team finished on top in the small bore team standings.
Individually, freshman Ruthanne Conner got her collegiate career off to a strong start as she won the small bore competition with a score of 563. UNG's Casadie Bragg and Luke Duncan each tied for fifth with a score of 546.
In the air rifle portion of the competition, Bragg finished second overall after registering 582 points with Connor finishing sixth after posting a 577.
Additionally, three Nighthawks were able to post personal air rifle records: Connor (577), Evan Bates (552) and Rachel Hamilton (520).
North Georgia returns to action on September 28 when the Nighthawks host the North Georgia Invitational in Griffin.
