North Georgia just one win away from NCAA Division II Championships
PEMBROKE, NC - North Georgia College & State University find themselves just one win away from the NCAA Division II National Championships and a trip to Houston, Texas, after taking down Francis Marion University 5-3 Friday evening to advance to the South Atlantic Regional Championship game.
North Georgia did what they have made a habit of in recent games, jumping on the board first which they did in the second inning with RBI singles from Kaelin Farrington and Laura Voyles to make it 3-0.
Shannan Tyson single handedly brought the Patriots back with a run scoring double in the third and an RBI double in the fifth to cut the Saints lead to just one at 3-2.
North Georgia added two more runs in the fifth inning on three hits and a Patriot error to for a 5-2 lead. Francis Marion pushed across another run in the sixth, but Sarah Phillips would hold the Patriots at bay and give the Saints a birth in the South Atlantic Regional Championship game with a 5-3 win.
Phillips (20-7) picked up the win, her third of the tournament, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.
Michaela Wolf (25-11) picked up the loss in six innings of work, allowing 10 hits and five runs, but only one earned while striking out three.
North Georgia will move on in the winners bracket to the championship game and face one of three teams that will battle to emerge out of the losers bracket to face the Saints Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
