North Georgia returns to action tomorrow afternoon
DAHLONEGA, GA - North Georgia College & State University used a walk off double by Laura Voyles in the bottom of the seventh to sneak away with a 3-2 win in the nightcap, but fell 1-0 in game one to split a doubleheader with 5th-ranked Francis Marion University Sunday evening in Peach Belt Conference action.
With the doubleheader split, North Georgia is 29-7 overall and 10-4 in the league, while Francis Marion moves to 30-9 overall and 10-6 in PBC play.
In game two, with the score knotted 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, but Krista Bess singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher to set up the last at-bat heroics by the Saints. Voyles stepped to the plate and sent a bloop single down the left field line, bringing Bess home to score the winning run and giving North Georgia a 3-2 comeback victory.
North Georgia picked up a run in the opening frame, but the Patriots answered in the second inning as Shannon Tyson singled to right field to plate two runs and give FMU a 2-1 lead. Both teams put zeros on the board until the sixth inning when Kaelin Farrington sent a line drive to left center that just cleared the fence to tie the game 2-2 and set up the dramatic finish.
Nicole Adkison (8-1) picked up the win for North Georgia, allowing six hits and two runs over seven innings, while Michaela Wolf suffered the loss in relief, allowing five hits and two runs over 5.1 innings.
In game one, Francis Marion picked up the first run of the game on a Jessica Birchmeier single that plated Tyson which turned out to be the only run of the contest in a Patriot 1-0 victory.
Wolf (21-6) held the Saints to just three hits in the complete game shutout while striking out three and walking two. Sarah Phillips (13-4) was the tough-luck loser, scattering five hits and striking out seven while being charged with the only run of the game.
North Georgia (29-7, 10-4 PBC) will return to action Monday, April 7, hosting UNC Pembroke who currently controls their own destiny for a PBC regular season title. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
