DAHLONEGA, GA – North Georgia College
& State University proved they deserved their new top-10
ranking Friday afternoon, defeating Barry University 4-3 in 9
innings, before taking down Catawba 12-2 in five innings at the
2009 Captain D’s Classic at Haines & Carolyn Hill
Stadium.
The Saints improve to 12-2 overall as they push their win streak to
four games dating back to a doubleheader sweep last week at
Tusculum.
In game one against Barry, the Saints used single runs in the
eighth and ninth innings to outlast the Bucs and take home a 4-3
victory. In the ninth, Kimberly Stercay came up with the clutch
two-out single, bringing home Caroline Bower to give North Georgia
the victory.
Sarah Phillips (7-1) picked up the victory as she went the
distance, allowing nine hits and three runs while striking out
five.
Pilar Harden and Stercay both tallied two hits in the game, while
Courtney McGuire launched her third home run of the season in the
first inning.
In game two, the Saints jumped all over Catawba in the early going,
scoring a single run in the first inning before putting up five
runs in the second and third innings and one more in the fifth for
the 12-2 five inning victory.
Three players recorded multiple hits, and Laura Voyles and McGuire
each drove in a pair of runs. Trisha Snider (5-1) snagged the win
in all five innings of work, allowing four hits and two earned runs
while fanning three.
North Georgia returns to action Saturday afternoon in the final day
of the 2009 Captain D’s Classic at. The Saints will take on
Barry again at 2:00 p.m., and close out the tournament against
Catawba at 6:00 p.m.
