DECTUR, AL – The 11th-ranked North
Georgia College & State University softball team stayed
undefeated Friday afternoon, taking down Missouri-St. Louis 4-0,
and Lewis University 13-4 on day one of the 2009 UAH Charger
Chillout.
In game one, North Georgia put pressure on the Tritons in the
opening inning as Kasey Knight and Leslee notched RBIs and the
Saints used a trio of hits to plate three first-inning runs.
Trish Snider (3-0) would take over from there, holding UMSL (3-5)
to just three hits while striking out six for the complete game
shutout.
In game two, North Georgia jumped out on top again in the first
inning, this time sending two runs across on just one hit as Pilar
Harden singled to right field with two outs to bring home Knight
and Courtney McGuire for an early 2-0 lead.
The Saints were far from down however, adding six more runs in the
second inning on just two hits. After the Flyers walked the bases
loaded, Laura Voyles captilized, doubling down the right field line
to bring home two runs. After a walk and a wild pitch scored
another run, Smith all but put the game out of reach, launching a
three-run blast to give North Georgia an 8-0 lead after just two
innings.
Natasha Willemse would add to the scoring in the third inning,
sending a home run to center field, her second of the year, to
bring Kaelin Farrnington around to score and push the score to
10-0.
Lewis University added a single run in the fourth and three runs
in the fifth, but the Saints put three more runs of their own on
the board in the fourth inning to end the game after just five
innings at 13-5.
Sarah Phillips (3-0) stayed perfect on the season, allowing three
hits and one run while striking out six in four innings of
work.
When all was said and done, the Saints tallied just seven hits,
but made the most of 10 walks as Smith and Harden each drove in
three, while four other players scored two runs.
The Saints will be right back in action tomorrow morning and
afternoon, taking on Wayne State (0-2) at 10:00 a.m. (CST) before
opposing Lynn University (6-8) at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
