#11 Saints Take Two From Mars Hill in '09 Opener
DAHLONEGA, GA - Despite wet conditions, a large
crowd turned out to watch the 11th-ranked North Georgia softball
team take a pair of games from the Mars Hill Lions in the
Saints’ 2009 season opener.
Sarah Phillips (1-0) picked up her first win of the season in game
one, giving up only five hits and one earned run. Paige Brantley
suffered the loss for the Lions, allowing four runs on eight
hits.
Laura Voyles went two for three with a triple and scored two runs,
one off a triple by Kim Stercay, while Courtney McGuire hit a two
run homer and a double off Brantley.
Game two saw the Saints ahead early, scoring four runs off
Lions’ pitcher Tara West in the first inning. Strong pitching
from Trisha Snider (1-0) gave her the win, and some key defensive
plays late in the game held the Lions to only one run.
McGuire and Voyles combined for a pair of hits at the plate, while
Harden singled through the left side to give the Saints their final
run, one of her two runs batted in.
The Saints head to Valdosta State to take on the Blazers on Tuesday
afternoon and travel to Decatur, Alabama for the Charger Chillout
next weekend.
