DAHLONEGA, GA – After spending three
straight weeks as the number two team in the country, the North
Georgia softball team claimed the nation’s top spot in the
latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, the program’s first #1
ranking in school history.
The Saints claim the #1 ranking after spending all 11 weeks this
season in the top-25, including the last 10 weeks in the top-10.
North Georgia was the 2nd in the country for three weeks before
picking up 10 first place votes and 322 points to pass
Alabama-Huntsville for the top spot. Lock Haven moved up one spot
to #2, and Valdosta State, a team the Saints swept in a pair of
one-run games this season, is up two places to #3. Angelo State and
Alabama-Huntsville round out the top five respectively.
The Saints are currently 43-3 overall, having won 20 straight
contests, and 35 of their last 36 games, including capturing the
Peach Belt Conference regular season and Tournament
Championship.
It has been 17 days since the Saints played their last contest,
defeating USC Aiken 4-0 in the PBC Tournament to capture the
program’s first Tournament Championship. North Georgia holds
the nation’s best winning percentage at .935 with the
team’s last loss coming 50 days ago at USC Aiken.
North Georgia is set to host one of 16 regional sites around the
country. The winner of each regional will advance to the NCAA Super
Regional May 15-16, with the Super Regional champion advancing to
the NCAA Division II College World Series in Salem, Virginia, May
21-25, at the James Moyer Sports Complex.
North Georgia will be the top overall seed in the Dahlonega
Regional, hosting and matching up with 8th seed Queens University
in the opening round, while #4 Augusta State will take on #5
Wingate University at the softball complex on the opening day of
the NCAA Southeast Regional in Dahlonega.
