Four Saints Named to Daktronics All-America Team
DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia softball team
continued to pick up postseason awards as the 2010 Daktronics
All-America Team was released and four Saints landed on the team,
the most by any program in the country.
Junior Sarah Phillips garnered the highest pitching honor in the
land, being named the Ron Lenz National Pitcher of the Year, while
Laura Voyles was named to the Second-Team, and Leslee Smith, and
Lauren Dykes snagged Third-Team honors.
Phillips has been named a Daktronics All-American for the second
straight year after earning First-Team honors a year. She led the
Saints with a 44-2 record on the 2010 season with a 1.00 earned run
average. She had 23 shutouts on the year and 41 complete games,
both marks that led the nation. The Powell, Ohio, native is a
two-time PBC and All-Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year,
recording 294 strikeouts in 300.0 innings of work.
Laura Voyles picks up her second career All-American honor after
being named to the NFCA Third-Team following the 2008 season. The
Powder Springs, Ga., native has now landed on the Second-Team after
a season that saw the senior hit .329 from the leadoff spot with 12
home runs and 34 runs batted in. She posted an impressive
team-leading .457 on-base percentage, and led the program with
seven triples, 53 runs scored, and was the only player to play and
start in all 53 games. She had 26 walks, 13 stolen bases in 15
attempts, and was hit by pitch 13 teams.
Leslee Smith picked up a much-deserved nod on the Third-Team after
a senior campaign that saw her hit .331 with 13 home runs, 58 runs
batted, and 106 total bases. One of the most decorated power
hitters in North Georgia history, Smith is the Program’s
all-time leader with 39 home runs, and second on the all-time list
with 191 runs batted in. As the designated player, the Lexington,
Ga., native played and started in 52 games, scoring 27 runs, and
posting a .385 on-base percentage.
After hovering around the .400 mark all year at the plate and
garnering First-Team All-Region honors, freshman Lauren Dykes
picked up Third-Team All-American honors as the left-fielder is hit
.389 with 45 runs scored, and 30 runs batted in. As a true
freshman, Dykes had an on-base percentage of .420, while also
hitting for some power with five home runs, three doubles, and two
triples.
The teams are sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world
leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for
virtually every sport at every level of competition, while the
teams were nominated and voted on by the nation’s NCAA
Division II Sports Information Directors.
The Saints posted a 51-game winning streak before falling in the
second round of the NCAA Division II College World Series, second
longest streak in NCAA softball history at any level. North Georgia
captured back-to-back Peach Belt Conference regular season and
tournament titles in 2010, and advanced to the NCAA National
Championships for the second time in as many years.
