Katherine Martin Named PBC Freshman of the Week
DAHLONEGA, GA – Katherine Martin has been named the
Peach Belt Conference freshman of the week announced this afternoon
from the league office, making her the first North Georgia player
to win the weekly award this season.
The freshman was honored earlier in the day as the Moe’s
Southwest Grill North Georgia Athlete of the Week and as how taken
it a step farther, being named the PBC Freshman of the Week after
continuing to swing her hot bat last week as Martin hit .455 with
five runs batted, including a grad slam in the final game of the
week.
In North Georgia's biggest series of the year at 6th-ranked
Alabama-Huntsville, Martin came up with her biggest game of the
year in the opener, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored as the
Atlanta, Ga., native led the Saints to a doubleheader sweep of the
Chargers. In game two of the pivotal series, Martin was
one-for-three with a run scored and a run batted in, while also
receiving a free pass.
She had a single hit in the doubleheader finale against Mars Hill,
but the freshman made it count, breaking a 1-1 tie in the third
inning with her first career grand slam and second career home run
to propel North Georgia to their 35th consecutive victory, tying
the program's all-time mark for consecutive victories.
Martin is currently hitting .353 on the season with nine doubles,
15 runs batted in, and 24 runs scored, while continuing to flash
the leather at first base with a .991 fielding percentage in 33
games played.
The Saints’ magic number to claim their second straight
Peach Belt Conference regular season championship is now just two,
giving North Georgia the chance to clinch the title against
Columbus State University on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader
sweep.
