DECATUR, AL
– The North Georgia softball team improved to a perfect 9-0
on the season on Saturday afternoon, picking up two more wins at
the UAH Charger Chillout as the #2 team in the country has scored
42 runs in the last two days.
North Georgia continues to stay undefeated on the season, now just
one win shy of tying the program’s best start in school
history, a 10-0 mark that came to start the 2008 season.
The Saints opened their Saturday morning with plenty of offense
and stellar pitching to get by West Alabama 9-0, before coming back
in the afternoon and taking down Arkansas-Monticello 6-2 for their
fifth straight victory at the UAH weekend tournament.
It only took five innings to deposit West Alabama in the first
game of the day as the Saints scored six first-inning runs and came
back with three more in the second to put a lid on all the offense
the fans would see.
For the Saints at the plate, nine different players recorded hits
in the game, while Pilar Harden and Natasha Willemse each drove in
a pair of runs. Sara Phillips (5-0) went the distance again,
allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out seven.
In game two, early scoring was again the story as the Saints
scored five runs in the opening inning to take control again, using
back-to-back doubles from Leslee Smith and Hilary Cox to score a
pair of runs, while Harden and Willemse notched run scoring singles
in the five-run frame.
North Georgia added a single run in the fifth inning before
Arkansas-Monticello spoiled the Saints’ third straight
shutout with runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including the
first earned run of the year scored against All-American hurler
Phillips.
Phillips (6-0) picked up her sixth complete game of the year,
going all 7.0 innings and allowing six hits and both runs, one
earned, while striking out five and walking one.
North Georgia has two more games scheduled for the weeked on the
final day of the 2010 UAH Charger Chillout, taking on 20th-ranked
Wayne State at 10:00 a.m., before turning around and capping the
weekend against North Alabama at 2:00 p.m.
