North Georgia to Host Star-Studded Weekend Classic
DAHLONEGA, GA – The 2nd-ranked North Georgia softball team is set to host a star-studded event over the weekend, as three of the top four teams in the country will battle at the Captain D's Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
With four teams combining for a 53-7-1 record to date converging to clash at the 2011 Captain D's Classic, host and No. 2 North Georgia welcomes No. 3 Valdosta State, No. 4 Alabama-Huntsville, and Tusculum College to town for eight games in two days.
North Georgia, ranked No. 2 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, enters the weekend at 20-2 on the year, having played one of the toughest schedules in the country to date. The Saints have played five ranked teams this season, while all four games during the Captain D's Classic will pair North Georgia with top 5 teams in the land.
Valdosta State, dropping one spot to No. 3 in the latest poll, enters the weekend at 7-1 on the year, splitting their first Gulf South Conference series of the year last week with West Florida. The Blazers opened the year as the preseason favorite in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, and are looking return to the World Series after falling in last year's National Championship game.
Alabama-Huntsville continues to make their presence felt on the national stage as the Chargers are ranked No. 4 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll. The Chargers are the only unbeaten team in the weekend classic, sitting 9-0-1 on the year after a tie due to darkness last week against No. 9 Indianapolis.
Possibly the hottest team heading into the Captain D's Classic is the only unranked team of the bunch, as Tusculum College is on a 13-game winning streak and sit at 17-4 overall on the season. The Pioneers have a win against their only ranked opponent of the year, taking down No. 13 California the first week of February.
Tusculum will have the toughest three-day stretch of anyone in the country this weekend, playing No. 2 North Georgia in a doubleheader on Friday, before turning around for the for the Captain D's Classic and playing No. 3 Valdosta State for two games, and No. 4 Alabama-Huntsville in a pair of games.
All eight games of the Captain D's Classic will take place at one of the best facilities in the country at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium. Home to the North Georgia softball team for the last three seasons, the complex has hosted the NCAA Southeast Regional and Super Regional each of the last two years, with a single-game attendance of 587 during the 2010 Super Regional Championship game.
