DAHLONEGA, GA – The 2nd-ranked North Georgia softball team swept Bellarmine in doubleheader action on Wednesday night at The Hill, using a walk-off hit and dominating pitching to win their ninth and 10th games in a row.
Game 1: North Georgia 4, Bellarmine 3
After giving up two runs in the top of the first, the Saints answered with three of their own in the bottom half and came away with a 4-3 victory.
Karlie Gillam led the way offensively going 3-for-3 including a solo home run. Gillam scored two runs and knocked in three of the four team RBI's.
After Melissa Dickie struggled early on, Jessica Coan came in and dominated Bellarmine the rest of the way. Coan threw five and a third innings, striking out 13 of the 16 batters she faced. Coan did not allow a hit and moved her record to 12-3 on the season.
Freshman Mackenzie Arlt also added a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 in her first start of the season.
North Georgia (20-3) also got help from Katherine Martin, who added a hit and a scored a run as well.
Bellarmine (12-9) was led by Lauren Summe who went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI's.
Game 2: North Georgia 4, Bellarmine 3
Kayla Minger hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth, allowing Tiffanie Burns to come around and score from second. Minger had her only hit of the game in a clutch situation, she finished 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI.
The Saints found themselves trailing heading into the bottom of the sixth, but found a way to score a couple of runs to close out the game and move to 21-3 on the season.
Coan did give up her first home run of the season, which the Knights up 3-2. The senior battled back and shut down Bellarmine in the seventh and eighth innings to pick up her 13th win of the season.
Rochelle Shuman scored two of the four runs for the Saints, while going 1-for-2 at the plate.
Senior catcher Hilary Cox hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to even things up early on. Cox hit a home run and finished with two RBI's in the game.
Krysten Connelly pitched four and two-thirds innings before parting way for Coan. Connelly finished with four strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.
The Saints return to action tomorrow evening, when they play host to West Georgia in doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and game two at 5:00 p.m.
