DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia softball team jumped to No. 1 in the country in the latest NFCA Division II poll released on Wednesday morning.
After going 8-2 last week the Saints (27-5) leapfrogged previous No. 1 Alabama-Huntsville after sweeping them over the weekend at the Captain D's Classic.
The Saints received 14 of 16 first place votes this week to top the poll for the first time since May 12, 2010. Angelo State checked in at No .2 and received the remaining two first place votes.
Valdosta State moved up a spot to third, while Cal State Monterey bay jumped two spots to fourth. Alabama-Huntsville rounded out this week's top five.
North Georgia started the week with doubleheader sweeps of Bellarmine and West Georgia. The Saints then went on to win three of their four contests as the Captain D's Classic, sweeping the Chargers and splitting with the University of Charleston.
North Georgia opened Peach Belt Conference play on Tuesday splitting a doubleheader with Flagler. The NFCA Division II top 25 poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
North Georgia returns to the diamond on March 15, when they travel to Savannah, Georgia, to take on Peach Belt Conference foe Armstrong Atlantic. The series is the second of four straight conference road doubleheaders the Saints will play to start the season.
