SAVANNAH, GA – The North Georgia softball team split with Armstrong in their second PBC doubleheader action of the season, finishing with a 3-2 win and a 5-3 defeat.
The currently No. 1-ranked Saints (28-6) used a Katie Block solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to drop the No. 11-ranked Pirates (17-8) in game one of the doubleheader at the Armstrong Softball Field.
Armstrong would threaten in their half of the seventh, placing runners at first and second base with no outs in the inning. Jessica Coan would force an easy groundout back to the circle and record a strikeout to take the victory.
It was Sarah Johnson who may have had the biggest hit of all, crushing a two-run home run to give North Georgia the 2-1 lead. Johnson finished 1-for-2 in the game with her two RBI's and a run scored.
Coan was back to her old-self, throwing another complete game and allowing just two earned runs. She also finished with four strikeouts.
Katherine Martin scored the other run for the Saints, as she was 1-for-3 at the plate.
The Pirates were led by Whitney Galloway in game one, as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
North Georgia fell behind again in the first inning, much like they did against Flagler on Tuesday. The Saints let the Pirates get a three run advantage right away in game two.
Martin was the bright spot for North Georgia in the second game, as her three-run home run was the only scoring the Saints would have. Martin finished 1-for-3 with three RBI's and a run scored.
The Saints also grounded into two double plays for the first time this season in a single game.
Coan gave up four earned runs on six hits in her two-plus innings of work.
Melissa Dickie came in relief and threw three and a third innings, allowing just one run on four hits.
After splitting their first two PBC series' of the season, North Georgia has a week off before traveling to Georgia Southwestern. The Saints play the Hurricanes on Friday, March 23, in Americus, Georgia.
