COLUMBUS, GA – The North Georgia softball team dropped the first game 1-0, then bounced back nicely to take down Columbus State 4-1 in game two of the doubleheader at Cougar Field.
Game 1 vs. Columbus State (CSU 1-0)
The No.3-ranked Saints (30-7, 4-3 PBC) struggled to get anything going offensively against the dominant pitching by Mollie Russell (12-6) for the Cougars (26-11, 5-2 PBC). They mustered up just five hits and left a total of 10 runners on base.
Despite another dominating pitching performance by Jessica Coan (20-6), the senior recorded one more tough loss after only allowing one run on two hits in the game. Coan finished with 10 strikeouts and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning.
The Saints struck out 13 times against Russell, the most in any game this season. It was the fifth one-run loss of the season for North Georgia, second loss by a score of 1-0 in which Coan pitched.
Game 2 vs. Columbus State (NG 4-1)
North Georgia (31-7, 5-3 PBC) responded nicely with a three-run fourth inning on their way to earning the split in their fourth consecutive conference series on the road.
The Saints used three Columbus State (26-12, 5-3 PBC) errors to help bring in four runs after not scoring in the first game against Russell.
Logging the only RBI in the game for North Georgia was Kayla Minger, who finished 1-for-3 with a run scored as well.
While only finishing with five hits, the Saints found a way to come through to avoid their first sweep of the season.
Melissa Dickie (10-0) moved her perfect record forward after allowing just one earned run on seven hits. Dickie struck out seven Cougar batters on her way to the complete game victory.
Columbus State outhit the Saints 7-5, but were forced into three unfortunate errors that allowed North Georgia to come away with the win.
North Georgia now prepares for two PBC series' at home this weekend, as they welcome in Francis Marion on Saturday and USC Aiken on Sunday. The action starts on Saturday at 12:00 noon against the Patriots.
