LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After starting the season ranked No. 12 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in the preseason poll, the University of North Georgia softball team has climbed eight spots to fourth in the first poll of the 2013 regular season following an 11-2 record.
Valdosta State University, the 2012 NCAA Division II national champion, remained atop the standings 14 first-place votes thanks to a 9-1 record. Southeastern Oklahoma State (14-3) climbed up to No. 2 in the nation after not being ranked in the preseason poll. West Texas A&M is fourth while Cal State Dominguez Hills checked in at fifth in the first poll of the season.
Fellow Peach Belt Conference schools Armstrong Atlantic State University, Flagler College and Columbus State University checked in at No. 11, No. 15 and No. 25 respectively.
The Saints completed the weekend sweep in the UAH Charger Chillout this past weekend with a 5-0 record to improve to 11-2 with a pair of shutouts.
Following her stellar weekend in the circle for the Saints, freshman hurler Courtney Poole was named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week. She posted a 3-0 record and earned her first save of the season with a 0.95 earned run average in 22 innings of work. She struck out 21 batters and allowed her opponents to hit just .128 against her.
The Saints welcome North Greenville University to Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium today for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
Following the region matchup with the Crusaders, North Georgia will once again hit the road, traveling to Salisbury, N.C. for the Catawba Invitational that will see them compete in an altered schedule starting Saturday, Feb. 23 and lasting through Sunday, Feb. 24.
