Fourth-Ranked Softball Sweeps Crusaders, Claim Second Game 10-0 in Five

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The fourth-ranked University of North Georgia softball team continued its winning ways Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Southeast Region opponent North Greenville University at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium. The Saints took the first game 1-0 and then turned things up with a 10-0 win in five innings in the second game over the favorites to win the Conference Carolinas title.

Game 1: #4 North Georgia 1, North Greenville 0

The day's first game proved to be quite the pitchers' duel as both Courtney Poole and Rachel Glazebrook worked though four scoreless innings and eventually gave up just two hits each. Poole was the first to give up a hit as the Crusaders got their two in the top of the fourth inning, but failed to score, stranding both runners on base.

North Georgia then broke through in the bottom of the same inning with one hit before breaking the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when Katie Block scored off a sacrifice fly from Kim McMillan to center field.

Poole, the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, struck out seven batters in the first game. Glazebrook accepted her first loss for the season while striking out six batters.

Game 2: #4 North Georgia 10, North Greenville 0 (5 Innings)

The day's second game saw the nationally-ranked Saints (13-2) turn up the heat with 10 runs off 10 hits to end the game with the Crusaders (1-3) early.

The Saints started with one run in each of the first and second innings before plating seven in bottom of the third inning. In the third frame, North Georgia batted around the order with seven different players scoring, including three off a Tiffanie Burns home run to center field and another two off a homer by Block to left field.

Already up 9-0, the Saints added a final insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when Amanda Hawkins doubled through the left side, scoring Katie Garrett.

When it was all said and done, nine different Saints had scored with Garrett crossing the dish twice.

Kayla Minger went 2-2 at the plate in the game with two runs batted in while Block ended her game 1-1 with her pair of RBIs.

Poole picked up her second win of the day with four innings of work to improve to 10-0 for the season while Krysten Connelly came in for the final inning to secure the combined no-hitter and shutout. Rebecca Holeman suffered her first loss of the season in two and a third innings of work that saw her give up four runs, three earned.

North Georgia will once again hit the road, traveling to Salisbury, N.C. for the Catawba Invitational that will see them compete in an altered schedule starting Saturday, Feb. 23 and lasting through Sunday, Feb. 24.
