LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the fourth straight week, the University of North Georgia softball team held station at No. 6 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll released Wednesday. The top six positions in the poll remained unchanged from last week.
The Saints (33-10, 13-5 PBC) went 3-1 last week in conference action with a split on the road at Flagler College on Wednesday before sweeping Georgia Southwestern State University at home on Sunday. The Saints out-scored their opponents 25-15 in the four games and ended the first game against Georgia Southwestern in just six innings.
North Georgia sits third in the conference standings heading into the final weekend of the regular-season but is in striking distance of the top spot occupied by No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic State University. The Pirates and Bobcats of Georgia College have six games to play to finish out the season, including against each other in Savannah on Tuesday, Apr. 12, while the Saints and Cougars of Columbus State University only have four, meaning the race for the regular-season title will come down to the wire.
After overtaking the top spot in the national poll a week ago, the University of Indianapolis (34-2) held on to first for the second week in a row with 15 of the possible 16 first-place votes as the Greyhounds extended their current winning streak to 27 games via a 6-0 record in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
West Texas A&M University (30-4) claimed the only other first-place vote from Indianapolis with Armstrong, defending national champions Valdosta State University (28-8) and Southeastern Oklahoma State University (32-7) rounding out the top-five.
Georgia College finally broke into the top-25 poll this week, checking in at No. 21 after winning nine of their last 10 games while Columbus State fell five spots to 24th.
North Georgia will play in its second top-25 showdown of the season this Friday, Apr. 12 as the Cougars of Columbus State will travel to Dahlonega for a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Saints will then close out the regular-season with "Senior Day" at Haines & Carolina Hill Stadium on Sunday, Apr. 14 when Young Harris College comes to town for a 2:00 p.m. twinbill.
The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions. The entire NFCA Top-25 Poll can be found HERE.
