Lady Eagles Hold Off North Georgia 76-72
JEFFERSON CITY, TN – North Georgia
trailed by 16 points at the half and as many as 19 in the second
period before surging back and falling 76-72 at Carson-Newman
Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
The Lady Saints drop their third straight contest and fall to 3-5
on the season, while Carson-Newman breaks out of a two-game skid
and improves to 8-2.
North Georgia found themselves down 19 points in the second period,
but never gave up as they rallied to pull within two points in the
final seconds. Syretha Marble pulled down an offensive rebound and
converted a three-point play the old fashioned way to put the Lady
Saints down 74-72 with just 10 seconds remaining. Everything seemed
to be falling into place as Krystyn Young used her last foul of the
game to send Ashley Kyle to the line, who promptly stepped up and
missed a pair of free throws, but North Georgia would not get a
final shot off as they fell 76-72 to the Lady Eagles.
Marble and Meredith Montgomery led the way with 15 points each,
while Whitney Randolph stepped up with 14 points and 12 rebounds
for her third straight double-double.
Four players paced Carson-Newman as Kyle led the way with 15 points
on 6-11 shooting, while Shari Buford and Ashley Tipton each added
10 points.
Carson-Newman shot 44.4 percent from the floor, while North Georgia
managed 39.7 percent and outrebounded the Lady Eagles 46-38.
The Lady Saints will take the rest of 2008 off before returning to
action on January 3, 2009 against the 18th-ranked Lady Pacers on
the campus of USC Aiken at 5:30 p.m.
