ST AUGUSTINE, FL
– The North Georgia women’s basketball team picked up
their second straight win on Thursday evening, traveling to Florida
to take on new league member Flagler College and holding on for a
65-57 victory in Peach Belt Conference action.
Two’s were wild on Thursday night as the Lady Saints won
their second straight game, picked up their second conference
victory, and were victorious on the road for the second time this
season.
North Georgia improves to 7-10 overall with the victory, and 2-6
in Peach Belt Conference action, while Flagler drops their sixth
straight game, falling to 6-11 overall and 1-7 in league play.
Lead changes and deadlocks dominated the first half as the score
was knotted six times in the first half, while the lead changed
hands on five different occasions with North Georgia holding the
largest lead at six with 16:39 left as Ieshia Alexander hit a fast
break layup to give the Lady Saints a 10-4 advantage.
Flagler held the a two-point lead at 23-21 late in the first half,
but the Lady Saints responded with a 6-0 run to end the period,
capped by a pair of free throws from Ali Cline to give North
Georgia a four-point edge at 27-23 heading into intermission.
North Georgia came out in the second half and established a pair
of eight-point leads early in the period, but Flagler fought back
and forced a tie at 46-46 with 6:11 remaining in the game. The Lady
Saints, who never trailed in the second half, answered with a
game-turning 10-0 run over the next three minutes, giving North
Georgia their first double-digit lead of the game at 56-46.
Flagler pulled to within six points with under a minute to play,
but Meredith Montgomery scored four points in the final 30 to seal
the eight-point road victory.
Whitney Randolph paced three North Georgia players in double
figures with 17 points as the senior scored double digits for the
eighth straight game, while Janyce Ealey added 13 points and Sarah
Stinson tallied 10. Montgomery was a point shy of double figures
with nine, while dishing out a career-high eight assists in the
victory.
Chanti Beckett scored a team-high 14 points for Flalger, scoring
half of her points from the free throw line, while Jen Knurek was
the only other double-digit score for the Saints, finishing with 10
points on 3-9 shooting from the field.
North Georgia shot 37 percent from the floor, 20 percent from long
range, and 77.4 percent from the free throw line, while Flagler was
27.1 percent from the field, 15.9 percent from the behind the arc,
and 73.3 percent from the charity stripe.
The Lady Saints return to action on
Saturday afternoon, traveling to Armstrong Atlantic for another
Peach Belt Conference battle with the Pirates. AASU is on a
five-game losing streak as tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m. in
Alumni Arena.
